A huge part of my creative audio practice since 2015 has been the creation of digital instruments and expressive interfaces. These range in complexity widely, from hacking existing game controllers to function as synthesisers, to programming custom devices using motion, environmental or sound sensors. Through all of this work, my core motivation is to uncover new forms of play. For me, the word “instrument” in this context might not just refer to a device that makes music, but could be something you listen through, or use to discover an exhibition or explore a collection.
When I create instruments for Installation and Theatre projects, I usually work both directly with artists, helping them to realise their specific vision, and also collaborating with venue and festival partners to put something together that is reliable, usable, and safe.
